Police Fiasco

The selectboard finally concluded that they couldn't do a secret investigation of Chief Bucknell despite their announced intention to do so.  So at the suggestion of "acting chief" Pilone, they hired a lawyer/investigator from the eastern part of the state to do a complete investigation of the department.  It will cost the taxpayers at least $10,000.

Why wasn't this problem dealt with long ago?  It's hardly new and the existence of dissension in the department has been widely known for a long time.  If the department has a management/staff problem, which we all know it has had forever, why didn't the selectmen deal with it before it exploded?

Too bad the investigator isn't going to look into the circumstances behind the suspicially sudden raising and resolution of an issue that has been festering for a long time.  As they say in Washington, who knew what, when did they know it and how were they involved?

In the meantime, Officer Pilone is acting like he's already the chief.  Perhaps he's qualified, and perhaps he'll ultimately become the chief, but it doesn't sit well for the head mutineer - one who's only been an Egremont officer for a couple of months - to be acting like Reena's already been ousted.

And finally, why isn't the selectboard also going all out with a complete investigation of the water department?  Seems to be a double standard, but we all know the members of the selectboard divide the townspeople into those they like and those they don't, and act accordingly.

I thought it was Reena's decision to keep it closed session, am I wrong? I have to wonder if it will ever be public. I would be interested in the stack of affidavits that were proffered. I guess we have two chiefs and more than enough indians

To move forward with the EWC mess, we need the names of those in the Town government who are responsable. Who sent out the bills? Who did this person report to?

Why can't somebody at least answer these simple questions?

These people have to be held accountable to the Town and its citizens. They are there to serve us, not themselves.

It seems to me that Mary Brazie must be involved in this up to her neck given her long involvement with the Town. Isn't it a clear conflict of interest for her to continue to sit there as a sort of judge of wha't being done to get to the bottom of all this?

Mr. Allen,

With all due respect, it is the acting Chief's job to make sure all of the tasks and responsibilities of the Chief are taken care of while he or she is absent, so naturally Officer Pilone would be "acting like he's...the chief", that's his job right now; and quite frankly, myself and many others think he is doing a great job bringing about positive changes for the department that have been long overdue, so people should be more encouraging rather than scornful, especially considering when the issue at hand, like you stated "has been festering for a long time" but no one did anything about it, until Pilone came along. Mutineer? More like Savior.
